Watching General Conference in Southern Nevada

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all around the world had the opportunity to listen to Church leaders in four sessions of general conference Oct. 3-4, 2026. This global broadcast originates in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City and takes place twice each year. Thousands attend in-person, and many more participate by tuning in live on various channels and platforms, including individuals in Southern Nevada.

Messages from Church leaders cover a range of topics, including kindness, decision-making, missionary work, temple attendance, and focusing on the life of Jesus Christ.

In October 2013, Church Leader Robert D. Hales explained, “In conferences we can receive the word of the Lord meant just for us.” He went on to say that, “Through conferences our faith is fortified and our testimonies deepened.”

Church members in Southern Nevada who watched or listened to the conference this weekend shared the impact that some of the messages had on them personally.

Melody Bowen said she found inspiration, hope, and encouragement from general conference during this current busy and stressful time in her life. “This general conference has inspired me with the knowledge and strength I needed,” she said. “I know general conference is a blessing and an opportunity for all who will put in the effort to heed the messages spoken.”

A talk from an apostle about testimonies or the belief in Jesus Christ was impactful for Kyley Beck, a mother of four children who leads the women’s Relief Society organization in her local Las Vegas congregation.

“I often feel that I don’t have much to contribute, that my testimony is too simple to be impactful,” she said, “but Gérald Caussé shared, ‘It need not be long, eloquent, or dramatic. It only needs to be true.’”

Nancy Gibson said she especially loved Elder Michael A. Dunn’s talk.

“I had a revelation that Heavenly Father was always giving me a helping hand to get me through my hardest times,” she said. “He helped me get through and accept my sister’s suicide by sending me the missionaries and their lessons about eternal families. His helping hand guided me through my health challenges. Most of all, I know that He was always there without me realizing it. I am a child of God!”

Shortly after the Saturday afternoon session, Spencer Osburn found out that he had a family member in the hospital. Feeling hopeless and afraid, he received comfort when his mom reminded him of Sister Runia said, “It’s human nature to want to fix things, and to become frustrated when something comes along that we cannot fix.”

“The gospel isn’t the umbrella,” Sister Runia said about these sudden trials. “It’s the solid rock we’re standing on during the storm.” Osburn reflected on these truths and found increased peace as he reflected on God’s plan and the Savior’s role in comforting us in our afflictions and helping families be together forever.

“Though I am still sad for my loved one, focusing on gospel truths has helped me feel more firmly planted on Christ,” Osburn said. “I am comforted to have Him as my rock amid the storm.”

The written version of the talks will be available at the above link soon as well. In his Sunday afternoon talk, the last message of the conference, President Dallin H. Oaks said, “As the talks of this conference are published, we invite all to study and ponder them prayerfully, and to act on the principles they explained.”

Studying the talks after conferences can bring added enlightenment. Church member Mia Lopez shared that her favorite quote from the April 2026 conference was when Elder David Bednar said, “At a fundamental level, charity certainly includes acts of compassion, kindness, and generosity directed towards others.”

Lopez said that she learned a lot in her Institute class about the meaning of Elder Bednar’s message and the importance of charity. “By the end of the class, I was enlightened to a whole new level,” she said.

In his October 4 Sunday morning address, Oaks encouraged church members to turn to Jesus Christ when they experience challenges, questions, or doubts. “Strong faith requires more than strong desire. It means daily trying, one step at a time, with prayer and scriptural learning.”

Oaks also discussed the upcoming Salt Lake Temple Celebration in 2027, and stated that information about that opportunity, both in-person and virtual options, can be found at https://www.templesquare.org/.
