An important milestone for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Las Vegas Valley has been reached in the newly progressing construction of the Lone Mountain Temple. A front facade piece including the “Holiness to the Lord” (Exodus 28:36) panel was recently put into place. The full inscription reads: “Holiness to the Lord: The House of the Lord” and can be found on every modern-day temple.

This inscription was first carved into the Salt Lake Temple during its construction in the 1800s by English convert John Rowe Moyle, an accomplished stonecutter who worked on the temple at great personal sacrifice. It connects members to their history, and more importantly, their faith.

Temples are important buildings that help members draw closer to the ultimate example of holiness and goodness, the Savior Jesus Christ. As members of the Church strive to live more like Christ, they can seek holiness by the way they treat others, by honoring their covenants, and by keeping God’s commandments.

The inscription on the temple is also an important reminder that temples are the literal “House of the Lord”. They are different from a chapel or meetinghouse, where members of the Church of Jesus Christ gather to worship every Sunday. Temples are holy places that are different from the rest of the world. They are where the most sacred covenants are made. They are places of peace and rest.

Ground was broken on the Lone Mountain Temple in September 2025, and construction is ongoing. As members observe the process of building a temple physically in the valley, we each have the unique opportunity to consider how we are building our own testimonies of Christ. The sign “Holiness to the Lord” invites each of us to consider how we can more fully follow the example of Christ and try to be a little more like Him each day.
