On May 30, 2023, Pope Francis created the Archdiocese of Las Vegas and named the Most Reverend George Leo Thomas, Ph.D. as the first Metropolitan Archbishop of Las Vegas.
“28 years ago, Las Vegas became a Diocese, and now on May 30, an Archdiocese. This speaks to the tremendous growth and vibrancy of the local faith and the commitment of the women and men that serve in leadership including our priests. This really is a remarkable legacy and moment in Las Vegas and for the Catholic Church as a whole,” commented newly appointed Archbishop Thomas. “With our Diocese being elevated to an Archdiocese, Pope Francis has discerned the need for a new Ecclesiastical Province in the Western United States. I am deeply honored and humbled by this significant recognition by the Pope.”
Local ecclesiastical leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sent their combined congratulations to the new Archdiocese and Archbishop Thomas for being named the first Metropolitan Archbishop of Las Vegas.
While this is a significant milestone for Catholics throughout the region, Las Vegas Area Authority Seventies, Elder Jonathon W. Bunker and Elder Thomas A. Thomas recognize the positive influence this designation will have on all local Christian followers during these challenging times. They issued a joint statement to the new Archbishop which states in part, “As fellow followers of our Savior Jesus Christ, we are grateful for the partnerships we have developed as we all strive to live the Second Great Commandment, to love our neighbors. From providing food for the hungry to joining together to influence legislative issues that jeopardize the sanctity of life to sharing the joy of the Giving Machines during the Christmas season, it has been our privilege to be a part of the great work that the Archbishop and Catholic church do in our community.
“We join the many others who have responded to your request for prayers as you embark upon this new journey. We pray that you will be blessed with wisdom and the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you lead and govern in your new capacity. We are confident that under your leadership, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Diocese will continue to flourish and grow in faith.”
